Our First Mangrove Clean‑Up: 200kg of Plastic Removed from the Creeks
Free, accessible, life‑changing knowledge — from gutter to government.
🌍 Understanding Waste
Last Saturday, 50 volunteers from our community gathered at the waterfront in [Your Community], determined to make a difference. The target: a once‑thriving mangrove creek now buried under a carpet of pure water sachets, plastic bottles, and abandoned fishing nets.
By 7 a.m., the team was ready. Armed with gloves, sacks, and canoes, we waded into the murky water and got to work. The roots of the mangroves were barely visible. For every step forward, we pulled out handfuls of plastic. It was backbreaking work, but the energy was electric.
In four hours, we removed 200 kilograms of plastic waste from just 1.5 kilometres of shoreline. The transformation was stunning. Water could flow again. The tangled roots could breathe. And for the first time in years, locals could see the mud beneath the trees.
One fisherman, Papa Ebi, who has fished these creeks for 30 years, said, “I never believe this place fit clean like this again. Maybe now the fish go come back.”
The clean‑up was not just about removing plastic. It was about proving that community action works. The Waste and Environmental Foundation (WAEF) is committed to making this a quarterly event, and we’re already planning the next one.
